What Is Yarn-Dyed Upholstery Fabric?
Yarn-dyed upholstery fabric is woven from yarn that already carries its color. The color is present in the yarn before it reaches the loom, so the pattern is built by the weave structure rather than applied by printing or by dyeing the finished cloth.
That is the sense in which buyers use the term. Yarn-dyed (also written yarn dyed) is the counterpart of piece-dyed: in piece dyeing, greige fabric is dyed after weaving; in yarn dyeing, colored yarn is woven. When upholstery fabric is sourced under a yarn-dyed description, the buyer normally expects the color and the pattern to sit in the yarn itself. This is why mills publish, for each series, the yarn types used in warp and weft, the weave construction, and the number of available colors.
Our Approach: Solution-Dyed Colored Yarn
Colored yarn can be produced by more than one route, and the route matters.
- Traditional yarn dyeing: yarn is formed first, then dyed, and the colored yarn is woven.
- The ABCD TEX route: color is introduced at the polymer and color-masterbatch stage to produce solution-dyed colored filament. That colored filament is then texturised, chenille-spun or fancy-yarn processed, and woven into upholstery fabric.
In strict process terminology, solution dyeing and conventional yarn dyeing are different coloring methods. ABCD TEX uses solution-dyed colored yarn rather than conventionally dyed yarn. In upholstery sourcing, fabrics woven from pre-colored yarns may be searched and grouped under "yarn-dyed" or "colored-yarn woven" categories. On this page, we use the buyer-facing term "yarn-dyed upholstery fabric" while stating the actual coloring route clearly: solution-dyed yarn.

Chenille, Fancy Yarn and Jacquard Construction
The six series above share three properties: the color method is solution-dyed; the fabric is woven from colored yarn; and the weave is jacquard.
Chenille is present in all six. In Qingwu, Duojin, Sia and CHINOE the chenille is recorded in the weft; in Masuo it is recorded in both warp and weft. For WYNBAN the yarn record shows chenille, but the warp or weft position is not recorded, so no position is stated here.
Fancy yarns are recorded in all six series, in the form of slub yarns, fancy yarns, chenille loop yarn and air-textured yarn.

Why Solution-Dyed Colored Yarn?
- The color is set in the fibre before the yarn is formed, and the finished fabric goes through no piece-dyeing stage.
- Batch-to-batch colour reproduction depends on repeating the same masterbatch formula rather than re-matching a dye bath, which can reduce one source of variation between production batches.
- This supports consistency; it does not mean colour variation can never occur. Yarn batch, weaving tension, finishing, lighting and viewing conditions all affect the result, so colour is agreed against an approved standard before bulk production.
- Because the colour sits in the yarn, jacquard patterns are built into the weave structure instead of being printed onto the surface.

FAQ
What is yarn-dyed upholstery fabric?
Upholstery fabric woven from yarn that is already colored. The pattern comes from the weave structure, not from printing or from dyeing the finished cloth. It is the opposite of piece-dyed fabric, which is dyed after weaving.
Is solution-dyed fabric the same as yarn-dyed fabric?
No. Solution dyeing describes how the yarn gets its colour: the colour is added at the polymer or masterbatch stage, before the fibre is formed. Yarn-dyed describes how the fabric is made: colored yarn is woven. Yarn-dyed fabric can be woven from solution-dyed yarn, and that is the case for the six series on this page.
